Markus Bautsch (born in Berlin in 1964) studied at the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) and graduated with a degree in physics. He wrote his thesis on scintillators and particle detectors at the Hahn-Meitner Institute for Nuclear Research (HMI) under Prof. Hans Bucka. He wrote his diploma thesis and dissertation at the Optical Institute of the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) under Prof. Heinz Niedrig in the fields of scanning tunnelling microscopy and particle optics. Other areas of study included astrophysics under Prof. Fritz Hinderer, electronics, computer science, and numerical mathematics, as well as an intermediate diploma in geodesy in 1999.

He worked full-time as a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) and at Stiftung Warentest, as well as freelance as an engineer. Over the years, he has gained professional experience in accelerator physics, electron microscopy, sputtering, superconductivity and superfluidity, spectroscopy and photometry, optical design, information security, and software design, among other fields.

In software development and design, he has worked with simulations, digital measurement and control technology, highly relational object-oriented database systems, and geodetic software, among other things. He has worked with the following programming languages (the first year of use is indicated in parentheses): Basic (1979), Assembler (1980), Fortran (1983), Modula-2 (1988), Oberon (1992), Component Pascal (1996). In teaching, he has taught the programming languages C (2001) and Java (2002).

In international product testing, he was responsible within the consortium International Consumer Research & Testing (ICRT) for the development, implementation, and evaluation of studies on digital cameras (compact cameras, system cameras, video cameras, action cameras, webcams, omnidirectional cameras, light field cameras, drones, underwater photography), lenses, scanners, projectors, binoculars, security software, image editing software, satellite navigation devices, and loudspeakers of all kinds.

From 1988 to 2025, he held teaching positions at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), the Technical University of Berlin (TUB), the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW), and the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (BHT). He taught experimental physics, electrical engineering, computer science, optics, and technical mechanics.

Since 2011, he has been teaching at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (BHT), where he has been employed as a full professor for optomechatronical systems since 2025.
