Our group investigates microbial genetics, horizontal gene transfer, biofilms, and antimicrobial strategies with a focus on Gram-positive pathogens and the spread of antibiotic resistance. Our interdisciplinary team combines molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy, plasmid engineering, and surface technologies to better understand microbial interactions and develop innovative approaches to combat resistance.
As part of the Department of Life Sciences and Technology at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology (BHT), the Grohmann Lab combines fundamental microbiology with application-oriented research, collaborating closely with national and international partners from academia, industry, and applied research institutions. Our work is embedded in the broader research network of the IMPACT cluster, which supports cross-disciplinary approaches and fosters innovation at the interface of biology, bioinformatics, and biotechnology.
Our team consists of international postdoctoral scientists, PhD students, Master’s and Bachelor’s students and external collaborators working together in a highly interactive environment. We value scientific curiosity, rigorous experimentation, transparent communication, and a collaborative spirit. Training the next generation of microbiological scientists is an essential part of our mission: students joining the lab gain hands-on experience in molecular biology, cloning, fluorescence microscopy, bacterial genetics, antimicrobial testing, and quantitative analysis. The lab supervises Bachelor's and Master's theses and provides structured guidance throughout project work.
In 2025, the Grohmann Lab moved into the newly completed Wedding Advanced Laboratories (WAL) building, a state-of-the-art research facility at BHT. We are equipped with a wide range of modern S1 and S2 laboratories, microbiological and molecular-biological workstations, fluorescence microscopy, plasmid engineering tools, and infrastructure for biofilm analysis and antimicrobial coating (AGXX®) studies. The WAL building provides an advanced technological environment that supports both cutting-edge research and high-quality student training.

Beyond research, the Grohmann Lab contributes to teaching within the Biotechnology programs at BHT and participates in public engagement activities, conferences, and collaborative scientific initiatives. We share our results through peer-reviewed publications, conference contributions, and outreach efforts aimed at raising awareness of antibiotic resistance and microbial challenges in modern society.
Whether you are a student interested in joining our research, a scientist searching for collaboration, or a partner from industry exploring innovative antimicrobial technologies, we invite you to learn more about our work, our team, and ongoing projects.
